The West Muskingum ‘Light the Hill’ group and West Muskingum Local School District announce that “Light the Hill” has entered into a contract with The Motz Group to commence construction on the replacement of the track and upgrade of the football playing field to a synthetic surface. Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2019 and to be complete in August ahead of the start of the fall sports seasons. The project will be paid for with private donations.
Light the Hill refocused their fundraising efforts over the summer of 2018 to target signing a contract this winter with a spring 2019 construction commencement. To date, the group has successfully raised $1.05 million in cash, pledges and in-kind commitments.
Fundraising will continue toward the $1.4 million total project target that also includes the renovation of the facility’s restrooms and concessions. Previous upgrades to the facility were made for bleachers and lighting.
Upgrade of the facility will benefit all aspects of the community and will be used by the majority of the high school and middle school sports, bands, youth leagues, and other community groups. The track has been in disrepair and not allowed the district to host a meet since 2007.
“This project will be a tremendous addition to the district and impact the opportunities for our students at all levels and across all of our buildings in addition to being a terrific community asset,” said Superintendent Chad Shawger.
Light the Hill representative Jeff Wilson added that “The West Muskingum community has been especially generous as we’ve sharpened our fundraising efforts over the last six months. While we have more work to do with additional fundraising still needed, we could not be prouder as we have reached this important milestone and are ready to start the construction process.”
“It’s a great day to be a Tornado! We have immense gratitude for our supporters and are extremely excited for our students and the West Muskingum community," stated Light the Hill member Jim Maniaci.
Finally, West Muskingum Local Schools Board of Education member and Light the Hill representative Bryan Melsheimer added, “It is amazing to see the outpouring of support from local businesses, alumni, residents and families to help this project come to fruition. This is a much needed update to our facilities and something our students and community deserve.”
To celebrate the signing, West Muskingum sophomore Evan Wilson created an acrylic blue and gold pen and presented it to Superintendent Shawger.
